Basnet Attorneys & Law is pleased to welcome four second-year students from the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law (JSW Law) for a one-month internship that began on 10 December 2025. The interns—Sonam Cheki (2L), Jigme Sonam Lhamo (2L), Tshedak Wangpo Gyatsho (2L), and Chime Yudron (2L), all from the Class of 2029—will be working closely with our team to gain practical exposure to corporate and commercial legal work in Bhutan.
Over the next few weeks, the interns will be introduced to how our office functions on a day-to-day basis, including our workflow, professional expectations, confidentiality rules, and basic office procedures. They will also spend time learning the fundamentals of corporate practice in Bhutan, with a focus on the Companies Act, corporate governance, shareholder rights, compliance duties, and the types of disputes we commonly deal with.
As the internship progresses, the students will start working on more hands-on tasks. They will learn the basics of contract drafting and will take part in discussions on drafting NDAs, simple MOUs, addendums, and demand letters. They will also prepare issue lists, draft summaries of agreements, and write short case briefs to strengthen their analytical and writing skills.
The interns will further be exposed to corporate compliance work, such as incorporation steps, annual filings, licensing requirements, and other regulatory processes. When appropriate, they will sit in on client meetings and internal discussions to understand how matters are handled in practice.
Toward the end of the program, the interns will take on slightly more advanced drafting tasks, including preparing a simple commercial agreement, a legal notice or demand letter, and a compliance checklist. Where suitable, they may also help with real client work under supervision, such as reviewing preliminary documents or drafting small portions of briefs. Each intern will receive a final evaluation on their overall performance, along with a Certificate of Completion.
Throughout the internship, the students are expected to maintain a routine of daily research, drafting exercises, case-brief writing, and general office support. Weekly check-ins with supervising attorneys will help track their progress and address any challenges.
Basnet Attorneys & Law is pleased to support JSW Law in providing practical training for future lawyers, and we look forward to working with the students over the coming month.
