Basnet Attorneys & Law is pleased to welcome Chimmi Sonam Yangchen, who joins the firm as a legal extern from March to May 2025 under the Externship Program of the Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law.
Chimmi is a final-year law student at JSW Law, where her coursework has covered Corporate Law, International Law, Alternative Dispute Resolution, and Legal Research and Writing.
Prior to joining the firm, Chimmi completed internships at the Bhutan Alternative Dispute Resolution Centre, the Family and Child Bench in Thimphu, and the Royal Bhutan Police. At the BADRC, she conducted a comparative gap analysis of Bhutan's dispute resolution framework against SIAC and UNCITRAL standards. At the Family and Child Bench, she observed court and mediation proceedings and researched model family court structures. Her internship with the Royal Bhutan Police familiarised her with criminal procedure, including charge-sheeting and witness statements.
Beyond her internships, Chimmi has contributed as a researcher to the drafting of Bhutan's first Mediation Rules and has participated in the JSW Law ADR Clinic, where she was involved in organising arbitration awareness programmes for local government officials and business communities across several Dzongkhags. She has also attended the Central Asia Vis Alumni Association Summer School on International Arbitration and completed a Certificate Course on Mediation in Paro.
During her time at the firm, Chimmi will be involved across a range of practice areas. This includes litigation work, arbitration and dispute resolution matters, corporate law and compliance, company incorporations, and foreign direct investment advisory. The externship is intended to give her broad exposure to the day-to-day demands of legal practice across these areas.
We look forward to her contribution to the firm's work over the months.
Welcome to the firm, Chimmi.
